The Times  - Shreveport, LA;  Article – Tom Wood: Saving for college yet?

Tom correctly stated that 529 Savings Plans owned by grandparents (assuming they don’t live in the student’s household) are not included in the financial aid calculations.  He forgot to mention that when there’s a distribution to pay for tuition and related costs, if it is more than the EFC (Expected Family Contribution – the minimum the federal gov’t. determines a family will pay at any college) then if the family has qualified for need-based financial aid, the college will reduce some of its aid – dollar for dollar!  For more information see, 529 Savings Plans – trick or treat©

Des Moines Register – Des Moines, IA;  ArticleImmigrants struggle to go to college

Reporter Lisa Rossi wrote about the plight of illegal students being shut out from Iowa state colleges.  For the academic, athletic or talented superstar who’se illegal, international, or otherwise, a private college can dole out tuition waivers and need-based grants or scholarships, just like nickels and dimes.  For those particular students, a private college can cost far less than a IA State.  Immigrants struggle to go to college
